Asbestos found in Toyota utes and vans

By Turner Freeman

Go back to the blog

Mechanics and owners of Toyota HiAce vans and HiLux utes should be on the alert after the recent discovery of counterfeit brakes containing asbestos.

Counterfeit brakes

These imitation brakes were imported and sold illegally to distributers around Australia who were unaware the products were counterfeit.

The brakes are designed to fit all Hiace vans produced between 2005 and 2015 and Hilux utes produced between 2004 -2005. This is more than half a million vehicles.

There is concern that mechanics from Toyota dealerships and independent garages may have been exposed to the toxic brake dust, as well as the general public.

Every time theses brakes are reapplied, asbestos particles are released into the air.

Toyota estimates that the number of mechanics who may have come across these brakes exceeds 100,000 persons.

Toyota have commenced proceedings against the distributors of the brake pads in the Federal Court.

Goods containing asbestos are a prohibited import in Australia, and asbestos was banned in all Australian workplaces from the end of 2003.

If you believe you may have been exposed to asbestos you should speak with your doctor. If you are suffering an asbestos-related illness you should also seek legal advice from one of our specialist dust diseases lawyers.
