We’re proud to announce that Annie Hoffman, Managing Partner of our SA and WA offices, has been presented with the Honourable Dr Robyn Layton AO KC Award by the Women Lawyers’ Association of South Australia.
“To be recognised in this way, and in the name of one of Australia’s most prominent and inspirational female lawyers, is truly an honour,” Annie said as she received the award from Dr Layton AO KC.
Annie is widely recognised as a leading specialist in asbestos and dust-disease compensation law and is ranked as the preeminent Asbestos & Dust Diseases Compensation Lawyer in South Australia by Doyle’s Guide. She has led several precedent-setting cases, including the first verdict against James Hardie & Coy Pty Limited under the Dust Diseases Act 2005 (SA), the first award of exemplary damages in South Australia against BHP Billiton Limited, and a landmark High Court case establishing that manufacturers have a continuing duty to warn about legacy-asbestos risks.
“When I found out about this award, I tried to reflect on what my ‘contribution’ to women in the profession really is. After a lot of thought, I realised it’s not about big cases and headline-grabbing moments – it’s about the small, yet consistent contributions. Like proving that it’s possible to run a successful practice and still be a mum. It’s the daily encouragement, the quiet advocacy, the example you set when you listen, lead with empathy, and help others rise with you,” Annie said.
The award is named in honour of the Honourable Dr Robyn Layton AO KC, a highly respected South Australian judge and human rights advocate whose career has spanned judicial appointments, major law-reform work and decades of service to Indigenous communities, women, children and refugees. A former Supreme Court judge, King’s Counsel and internationally recognised legal expert, Dr Layton is known for her leadership, social justice work and commitment to advancing gender equality in the legal profession. The award reflects her legacy by recognising women lawyers who demonstrate excellence in practice, leadership and meaningful contribution to the profession and the community.
