Office of Asbestos Safety
The Federal Government established the Office of Asbestos Safety in August 2012. The Office of Asbestos Safety is currently consulting with unions, industry, researchers, hygienists, asbestos advocacy groups and others to develop systems and processes for the removal of asbestos from structures in Australia.
In addition to establishing the Office of Asbestos Safety, the Federal Government has recently released a discussion draft of the National Strategic Plan for Asbestos Awareness and Management. Potential outcomes that the Strategic Plan is aiming for include:
- All asbestos safety removed from all government and commercial buildings by 2030.
- Increased community awareness of the risks posed by asbestos.
- Nationally consistent training for all workers who work with asbestos.
- Effective and safe handling of asbestos in transport, storage and disposal.
- Australia to be recognised as an international voice in the global campaign to ban asbestos.
Turner Freeman assisted the Queensland Asbestos Related Disease Support Society in preparing submissions for the Strategic Plan.
The Office of Asbestos Safety aims to finalise the National Strategic Plan by 1 July 2013.
